ABOUT

Halvard Hatlen works with painting, drawing and graphics. His art is personal. It is inspired by thoughts about life, as a human being, and thoughts about living, about human relations - from birth, childhood, growing up, establishment, and later to get old. He paints life as a journey, as a balancing act, as a series of events and choices - choices that can be of great importance to the rest of life. He is concerned with the value of being a human being, tolerating and accepting one another's inequalities. But also the themes of love - and death and the eternal. Some work is inspired by Christian faith and a desire to express a personal experience around this.

In 1989, after studying in Bergen, he moved to Isfjorden. Here he was totally captivated by the scenery and the landscape. This is reflected in his naturalistic landscape paintings from this period. From around 2003, he was less active as an artist, a sort of art break until 2012. His recent works resume the motifs of previous years and the landscape paintings are more abstract.

Hatlen grew up in the city of Molde, but has in later years lived both in the village of Isfjorden and Batnfjorden. Today he resides in Eide, Nordmøre. As teenager he began to think more seriously about pursuing a career in visual arts. After graduation and military service, he studied at the Vestlandske Academy of Fine Art (Bergen Academy of Art and Design). He has participated in several exhibitions, including the Norwegian State Autumn Exhibition and Vestlandsutstillingen.
